The Evolving Role of Home Infusion Specialty Pharmacy: Reflections by Dr. Helen Okidegbe Uwajeh
06/11/2025

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Helen Okidegbe Uwajeh, IG/Home Infusion Specialty Clinical Pharmacist at AcariaHealth, whose article, Reflections on the Evolving Role of Home Infusion Specialty Pharmacy, was recently featured in NASP’s The Advocate Newsletter (2025, Vol. 2, pp.12–13).
In her thoughtful reflection, Dr. Okidegbe Uwajeh explores how home infusion specialty pharmacy (SP) has evolved over the years—from a model centered on close pharmacist-provider collaboration to one increasingly shaped by payer requirements. While innovation has advanced the field in many ways, she notes that restrictive insurance practices now often dictate medication choices, complicating the treatment process and sometimes increasing the burden on patients.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Okidegbe Uwajeh highlights the essential role that specialty pharmacists and care teams play in ensuring that patients receive safe, effective, and timely treatment. She details how AcariaHealth’s collaborative, multidisciplinary approach—including pharmacists, technicians, patient care specialists, nurse case managers, and Provider Experience Managers—helps deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care, even in a complex and evolving healthcare environment.
Her article reminds us that while the specialty pharmacy landscape continues to shift, the core mission remains the same: delivering high-quality, compassionate care tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
We’re grateful to Dr. Helen Okidegbe Uwajeh for sharing her perspective and for the exceptional leadership she brings to the AcariaHealth team.
